MINT (German) Mathematik, Informatik, Naturwissenschaften and Technologie

STEM (English) an acronym for Science Technology Engineering Mathematics.

The International School of Bremen has met the required standards and has been awarded the status 'MINT-EC Partner School' by MINT-EC das nationale Excellence-Netzwerk; one of only three schools in the State of Bremen and the first international school in Germany to achieve this recognition.


STEM is a multidisciplinary approach to teaching these topics, which are of vital importance in developing and sustaining national economies. Not only does it embrace cross-curricular activity in the classroom, but also reaches out beyond the school boundaries, embracing  involvement from, and with, both academia and industry. This give students opportunities to be introduced to cutting-edge research and exciting, emerging developments, allowing, and fostering, a greater involvement and understanding of our technological world. The hope is that some students will be inspired to follow careers within STEM, or if not apply the acquired knowledge, skills, techniques and thinking to their chosen disciplines.

Examples of STEM projects at ISB

Jugend forscht

This School Year 2016-17 six ISB students entered the "Jugend forscht" competition. Having written and presented a 15 page report they were interviewed at the regional exhibition and were awarded the following:


Biology          first and second prize

Technology     second prize

Physics          second prize


Our first prize winner was allowed to move to the State of Bremen exhibition (Landeswettbewerb). She as one of our most talented senior students was awarded the third place in Biology.



Grade 7 upwards. They work with one or two teachers drawn from IT, Science and Maths. They obviously play on the construction side of the activities but also have to focus on serious programming. The challenge is always to get a viable machine to work as intended. Their ideas and results are tested in competition usually once a year either interacting with other international schools and technical colleges from across Europe. The photos are of a recent event in which our students pitted their skills against teams of European students all meeting at the technical University in Vienna. See picture above.


IMYC Rocket Launching Project

This Grade 8 IMYC Exit Point, a collaborative project between the University of Bremen, the DLR School Lab, the Hochschule Bremen, the Institute for Aerospace-Technology and the International School of Bremen was a great success.

European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL)

International computer Driving Licence (ICDL)

ECDL / ICDL is the international standard in end-user computer skills. It is a high-quality, internationally recognised certification designed, validated, and approved by academic and international experts from around the world. The ability to use a computer effectively is an essential life skill. Computer skills enable people of all ages to understand and use technology to improve their personal and professional lives. Certified computer skills can help the holder’s professional life by making them more attractive to employers, while increasing their ability to communicate and access information and services in their personal life. For several years now the ISB has maintained a trained body of staff capable of administering the training and tests of ECDL for staff, students and other community members. Recently we have begun a trial program to account for the inability to timetable ICT lessons beyond Grade 8. The scheme, piloted by a former ICT teacher, dedicates the entire spring term to directed study and regular administered tests for a sequence of ECDL modules. The student can of course continue this in their own time beyond Grade 8.

In February 2017 ISB hosted for the first time the renowned ISMFT International Schools Mathematics Teachers Foundation junior Maths competition. This involved over 200 participants from 14 different countries. They were supported by 43 of their respective Maths teachers. Prizes were awarded to students from across the world. This event was supported and sponsored by OHB, Mars and Airbus.

ISB students also compete on an annual basis in the Australian Kangaroo Maths competition.
